Stepping away from auto: An introduction to digital photography

Are you a keen amateur photographer or beginner looking to develop your photography skills? If so this class is for you!

This afternoon workshop (running from 12:30 until 17:00) is based in Portaferry and offers an introduction to digital photography designed for users of DSLRs or Compact System Mirrorless Cameras. The course will have a maximum of eight participants to ensure plenty of individual attention and time for one to one tuition. We will move away from the auto mode and learn to explore the sensitive manual settings that your camera can offer!

The workshop will begin with a class session at the Portaferry Hub where we will cover the benefits of using the semi-automatic P, A, S, M modes (Program shift, Aperture priority, Shutter priority and Manual) and when to use them. Alongside this we will explore the three elements of exposure; shutter speed, aperture and ISO, and how to use these on your camera.

We will then move outside of the classroom to use these new setting techniques on a landscape and wildlife walk, exploring the shores of Strangford Lough which hosts a diverse range of birds, seals and other wildlife amongst scenic landscapes. These subjects will also provide ideal examples of how to hone your photography skills, including image composition and use of filters (which I will provide for demonstration). Following our photography walk, we will head back to the classroom for a well-earned tea break and a chance to discuss individual photos, questions and ideas. Our final activity will be to head outside to capture the fantastic sunsets which regularly occur reflected over the lough.

For this course you will require a camera that provides the option to use P, A, S, M modes (please feel free to email me if you are not sure) and able to cover ~3 miles (slow pace) on a flat road walk. The classroom setting and walking tour are all fully wheelchair accessible, please contact me for individual requirements. Please be aware we will be outside for several hours and so appropriate footwear and clothing will be necessary, however if the weather is predicted to be particularly wild, we will reschedule the workshop dates (please see cancellation policy below).

This workshop is subject to weather conditions as a large proportion of our time will be spent outdoors, so if the weather forecast is very wet and a date has to be cancelled then a full refund or a change of date will be offered (whichever is preferred). At least 24 hours notice will be given for cancellation based on weather conditions. Similarly if for any other reason (i.e. illness or the minimum number of participants of 3 people is not met) a workshop has to be cancelled then the same rules will apply. Following purchase, the customer is entitled to a full refund for upto 14 days, to request a refund please email, after this time period there will be no refunded transactions, unless in the case of illness, where exchange to a different course date will be offered.
